 In the past year the Androscoggin Valley Soil and Water Conservation District
Board of Supervisors has focused on the challenges created with reduced funding
and increased workload to meet the ever increasing requests from the citizens of
Androscoggin and Sagadahoc Counties.
In one of our discussions, the question was proposed: “How can the friends of
the Conservation District be a part of our team, allowing the work of
conservation to grow while improving the quality and health of our soil, water,
and natural resources in Androscoggin and Sagadahoc Counties?”
Three types of volunteer work were identified:
- Clerical: Tasks might include assisting the office manager with
mailings, filing, and fundraising,
or working off-site at special events.
- Publicity/Outreach: Projects might include assistance with website;
writing press releases, brochures,
or public notices; helping to develop
displays for public venues; representing the District at meetings of
other
resource groups and providing a summary report to the District Board.
- Technical Assistance: Activities might include providing help with
outdoor projects such as installing vegetated
buffers or conservation
plantings; litter patrols; watershed surveys; building and installing water
bars or other
conservation practices such as drip edges and stable pathways;
assisting at workshops on a variety of
conservation concerns.
